Winter is here, and unfortunately, this means cold and flu season is also on its way. While being sick is no fun, it is still important to take care of your mouth. Here are some ways to take care of your oral hygiene while you’re feeling under the weather.

First, make sure that you are brushing twice a day, for two minutes each time. Be sure to continue to floss every day. Never share your toothbrush. This rule applies especially when you are sick.

The flu virus can live on surfaces, such as your toothbrush, for up to 72 hours. You probably won’t reinfect yourself unless you are severely immunocompromised. However, those germs may cross-contaminate other toothbrushes, making other people sick. Therefore, you may decide to replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head after being sick.

Similarly, try to choose the right liquids. Accompany any sports drinks with plain water, as they are usually full of both sugar and acid.  Try to choose varieties with little or no sugar. If you drink tea, avoid adding lemon and sugar.
